St Augustine's Church was consecrated in 1840. It was the first Roman Catholic church built in Utrecht after the Reformation. The church was built by K.G. Zocher in the so-called Wasserbauamt style. This designation is based on the fact that church construction at that time was under the authority of the Hydraulic Engineering Department. The style is characterised by the use of elements from Greek and Roman architecture. In the case of St Augustine's Church, these are above all the colossal columns with the frieze at the front and the triangular tympanum above. On the façade behind the columns you can see meander ornaments. The sound holes in the tower, however, are in the plain 'Gothic' style. From the inside, the church stands out for its calm, non-articulated neo-baroque division of space, as well as its richly decorated, stuccoed barrel vault and the classical capitals on the columns and pilasters.
