From 1402 to 1839, a city crane stood on the Oudegracht near the current Winkel van Sinkel, with which goods were hoisted from the ships at the wharf or to the street.
A reconstruction of the medieval city crane of Utrecht was put into use on May 21, 2022 on the Weerdsingel, next to the Monica Bridge.
The City Crane Foundation has been working on it for three years, with students from the Vreeswijk Craft School who are being trained to become skilled woodworkers and metalworkers. Inside the structure will be a mechanism for operating the crane. The crane is propelled by treadwheels, which people walk on. All in all, the city crane is about 13.5 meters high and has a weight of 13,000 kilos.
