The church is first documented in 1319.

The oldest part of the Gothic village church of Herrnburg is the square box choir, typical of northern Germany, with its equally typical three east windows. It is dated to the middle of the 13th century. The nave and the sacristy are attributed to the emergence of late Gothic to the end of the 15th century. The mighty church tower is even younger and was placed in front of the west side of the nave in the first half of the 16th century.

The choir's original cross vaults were replaced in 1767 by a flat wooden beam ceiling construction. The ship has a flat wooden ceiling, the sacristy, however, a barrel vault. The tower carries a hipped roof of red bricks.
