The Kirke is a church with a turbulent history.

In 1796, a full-fledged church was built in Westdorpe on the site where a barn church previously stood. The church was named after the Visitation of Our Lady.

It was largely renovated in 1841 and in 1887 a new church building was built a few meters from the old church. The Church of Our Lady of the Visitation with its fifty-meter-high tower towered far above its surroundings. Unfortunately, the tower was blown up by the retreating Walloon troops in 1940 and was subsequently set on fire. The church burned down completely. Only the walls remained standing.

After the war, the residents decided to have the church rise from its ashes in a grander and more majestic manner. In 1947, the new Church of Our Lady of the Visitation, designed by architects B.P.J. Oomen and A.W. Oomen, ordained. A brick church in a traditionalist style with a gable roof.

In 2013, the church, together with five other churches in Central Zeeland Flanders, was forced to close its doors due to the declining number of visitors. The Westdorpe Church Foundation was founded to save the church from the demolition hammer.

On May 23, 2014, the former Our Lady of the Visitation Church was renamed the multifunctional center 'De Kirke'. The associations that were previously located in the village hall can continue their activities in the transformed church. Billiards, racing ball, table tennis, group training, choir rehearsals, dance lessons, ... are part of the daily activities. Private individuals can also rent the space for a party, workshop or meeting. Weddings and funerals also still take place in the former church.

In addition to the glass box as a community center, the building is also partly furnished as a museum of 'Oud Westdorpe'. It is remarkable that the marble altar (owned by the diocese) has been preserved at the front of the church. Together with some other religious objects, the altar is shielded from the rest of the room with a glass plate.
