This tidal mill was part of the fortifications of Sas van Gent.
    Historical interpretation:
The mill was built in 1696 and served as a corn mill. There was a bakery next door. It was built into the rampart to make it invulnerable to the ammunition of the time. After all, windmills showed greater vulnerability and flour mills were necessary for food supply in times of siege. However, this mill did not work so much on the tides, because the water wheel was usually driven by excess polder water, which was then discharged to the canal.

The mill was located between the Hollandia and Zeelandia bastions. In 1747, a siege by the French took place in the context of the War of the Austrian Succession, and the mill was then used for grinding.

From 1795 onwards, the demolition of the large fortress that once was Sas van Gent began. The mill was then no longer used. The Zeelandia bastion was also demolished from 1930 to 1935 and the mill water was filled in in 1951.

What remained was a wall with an opening through which the water once flowed. This was preserved in 1988.
