I stood for a while watching the functioning of this swing bridge over the canal from Ghent to Terneuzen: first a bell as a harbinger and then the lowering of the barriers, then it goes up a bit, then it turns parallel to the canal. When the ship(s) has (have) passed, everything in reverse order. All in all, this takes at least 20 minutes, if you are lucky as a waiting motorist/cyclist/walker. I can imagine that, as a resident of this region, you sometimes get slightly irritated if you have to go to the other side regularly.
