The Royal Military Canal is a canal of approximately 22 miles between Seabrook near Folkestone and Cliff End near Hastings, following the old cliff line bordering the Romney Marsh wetland area. Construction started on 30 October 1804. The waterway was completed in April 1809 at a cost of £234,000.

The Royal Military Canal was built as a third line of defense against a Napoleonic invasion. An invasion of the French army from the sea towards the Romney Marsh area was expected. However, the chance of an invasion decreased sharply after the Battle of Trafalgar. This happened during the construction of the canal in 1805. As a result, the costs of further construction were difficult to defend politically. It was decided to make the canal publicly navigable against a toll.
