    The Casa del Mono, also called Casa de Pizarro-Espadero, is a palace in the monumental complex of Cáceres that contains one of the most tragic legends in the history of the city.

      Legend has it that in the 15th century a couple who were trying to have a child lived in this house. They were Gonzalo de Cáceres and Marina Alonso de los Nidos.

      Upon returning from one of his long trips to America, Gonzalo brought Marina a monkey. Since they couldn't have a baby, they treated him as if he were their son, with his own bedroom and toys.

      Some time later, the couple managed to have a son, but the monkey, full of jealousy due to lack of attention, threw him out of the window and he died.

      According to legend, Marina died after a deep depression and Gonzalo had the monkey chained until he died. Neighbors in the area say that from time to time a baby is heard crying around the house.
