Today's seal tower was built in 1545 by Martin Heunsler from Stein am Rhein. It replaced an older building that served as the eastern entrance to the city. As early as the 16th century, the tower served not only as a clock tower, but also to store documents and the city seal.
In 1863 the passage was increased by one meter. In 1943/44 the tower and the clockwork were extensively restored.
