A miniature glacier at 820 m above sea level, right outside the gates of the city of Salzburg and just 45 minutes away on foot? The family-friendly hike to the ice chapel (834 m) at the foot of the Watzmann east face offers all this and a fantastic mountain panorama. The ship takes you across the Königssee to St. Bartholomä before quickly reaching the impressive gate to the ice chapel on well-developed hiking trails through the forest. Overall, a varied and worthwhile hike for the whole family with views of the surrounding peaks of the Berchtesgaden Alps in Bavaria.

    Directions

The starting point for this glacier hike is Schönau am Königsee. You can take the electric boat across the Königsee to St. Bartholomä (journey time approx. 35 minutes). The fjord-like lake is 8 km long, up to 1.2 km wide and lies at 603 m. The Königssee is mainly fed by underground tributaries, so with a water depth of up to 190 m it remains relatively cold even in midsummer. The Watzmann east face comes into view just before you reach St. Bartholomä.

We stood on the ice chapel. I would have liked to see it from the inside. That's how it is in winter.

A lot of snow in January, only recommended with Grödel
