Mittersill train station is on the Pinzgau local railway, which is also called the Pinzgau or Krimml railway. The narrow-gauge railway with a gauge of 760 mm is a former ÖBB line that was taken over by the state of Salzburg in 2008. It runs 53 kilometers in the Salzach valley and connects Zell am See with Krimml.
The section between Mittersill and Wald was so damaged in 2005 that traffic was stopped. The route was rebuilt in two stages and reopened on September 11, 2010.
