Around 240 to 230 million years ago, Central Europe was largely covered by a shallow inland sea, which was connected to the wide sea, the Tethys, in the southeast. The bottom of this subtropical shallow sea was populated by mussels, seallia and brachiopods. The open body of water, on the other hand, was the habitat of cephalopods, the ceratites. Due to their wide distribution and species diversity, they represent important index fossils of the Muschelkalk.
