The pilgrimage church of St. Mary's Birth forms the center of the old basket-making and pilgrimage town of Dalhausen. First mentioned in 971, it belonged to the parish of Edessen until 1221 (Monika's description of today's Klus Edessen was probably meant by mistake!!!). From 1221 to 2012, the pilgrimage church (and its predecessors) was also the parish church of Dalhausen, and since 2013 it has been a branch church of the parish of the Holy Trinity in Beverungen. From 1305 to 1810 the church belonged to the Benedictine abbey in Gehrden. The miraculous image of Dalhausen is one of the oldest images of the Virgin Mary in Westphalia and dates from around 1300. The small figure made of linden wood depicts Mary with the baby Jesus in her arms and has been venerated for many centuries. The main pilgrimage days are the Visitation (July 2nd) and the Nativity of Mary (September 8th), they are celebrated on the day and the following Sunday respectively. There is also the tradition of pilgrimage days to the Seven Sorrows of Mary on the 7 Fridays before Good Friday.

Today's building is a result of extensive conversion and extension measures of the 1718 to 1721 newly built church in the years 1949 to 1953. The interior is essentially from the baroque period.

The pilgrimage church is open during the day.

Unfortunately the church wasn't open today, but it's a nice place, in the middle of the forest, where you can rest a little and discover. In any case, you should walk around the church and look at the cemetery by the creek.
