Scheinzeche Haard: It was created during the 2nd World War by the Wehrmacht and was used for tricky deception during enemy air raids. At that time there was no satellite navigation and orientation was based on visible landmarks to the destination. Wooden dummies and corresponding lighting simulated the impression of a large mine and attracted the nocturnal bombings without causing any real damage in the unpopulated area, while the actual Ewald colliery was relatively spared. From the Scheinzeche, an old concrete bunker and some bomb craters can be seen as distinctive landforms. The bunker has become a home for bats and thus has a very peaceful purpose.
