Loess.Almost everywhere in the Kaiserstuhl you will encounter an ocher-yellow material that has spread across the entire landscape like a ground cover. However, loess is not "dirt", but a velvety, fluffy rock. The wind blew it from the great gravel fields of the wild Rhine landscape during and immediately after the ice ages and found it deposited here. Half of loess is made up of the finest quartz, the other half is made up of lime and dolomite dust (around 30%), feldspar, mica and clay minerals. This composition well represents the geological structure of the northern Alpine range from which the gravel fields originate.
