      The legend:
The life of Reinhildis is told in a legend that is very well known in the Tecklenburger Land. The first known record is a written record from 1629, written by Sweder von Schele.[2][3]

In June 1629, this same Sweder von Schele was a guest of his relatives at the Surenburg in Riesenbeck. During this time, he visited his aunt's grave in the parish church of St. Kalixtus Riesenbeck. As he walked through the church, he noticed the epitaph of St. Reinhildis. The particularly artistically designed gravestone led him to suspect that this was the tomb of the founder of the church. He then inquired about Reinhildis, who was mentioned in the inscription on the gravestone.

He was told that Reinhildis was a farmer's daughter from Westerkappeln. The young girl often left the cattle alone while tending them and instead went to the church to pray. Her stepfather was very angry about this behavior and suggested that Reinhildis' mother get rid of her disobedient daughter.

One day the stepfather set off for Osnabrück. During this time the mother killed her daughter. On the way home from Osnabrück the stepfather fell from his horse while drunk and broke his neck.

Reinhildis' body was laid on a cart pulled by animals that she had tended during her lifetime. The animals then brought her body to Riesenbeck, where construction of a new church had just begun.

Many sacrifices were made at Reinhildis' grave, especially by people whose livestock was sick. The Counts of Tecklenburg are also said to have made sacrifices at her grave.[4]

The legend is described in literature by Friedrich Arnold Steinmann in 1825 and by Johann Georg Theodor Grässe in 1868, among others.[5][6]

According to this legend, she was born in the "Knüppenhaus", a farmhouse in Westerkappeln-Düte. There she had to do hard work under her hard-hearted mother and stepfather.
