Stunning 2.5hr trip along the River Drin. We bought our tickets at the small cafe just before the terminal. The ferry departs once a day so arrive early to be sure of getting on. They pack the cars and passengers very tightly, we found standing room (and a fantastic view) from the back of the ferry (past the toilets)

    Frequently Asked Questions

What are the parking options at the Komani and Fierze ferry terminals?

At the Komani terminal, parking is available but can fill up quickly, especially during peak season. It's highly recommended to arrive early if you plan to bring a vehicle. Parking at the Fierze terminal is generally less congested, but it's still advisable to plan ahead, particularly if you're connecting to other transport or hikes.

Are there specific viewpoints or natural landmarks to look out for during the Komani Lake ferry journey?

The entire journey offers continuous spectacular views, often compared to fjords. Look out for the narrowest gorges where rock walls rise hundreds of meters directly from the water. The combination of dense forested hills, vertical slopes, and deep gorges creates a dramatic landscape throughout the 2.5 to 3-hour trip. The crystal-clear, icy blue and emerald waters are also a highlight.

What amenities are available on board the Komani Lake ferry?

The ferries are primarily functional, designed to transport both passengers and vehicles. While not luxurious, they typically offer basic facilities. Some ferries may have a small cafe or snack bar. For the best views, many visitors find a standing spot at the back of the ferry. It's advisable to bring your own provisions for the journey.

Are there other boat tours or activities available on Komani Lake besides the main ferry service?

Yes, beyond the main ferry, smaller boats operate on the lake, often serving remote villages. These can sometimes be arranged for private tours or to access specific areas like the Shala River. Activities such as wild swimming in the cold, clear waters and kayaking are also popular options for exploring the lake more intimately.

What permits are needed for hiking or camping around Komani Lake or for the Valbona-Theth trek?

While the ferry ride itself doesn't require permits, hiking in protected areas like Valbona National Park, which is often accessed via the ferry, may have specific regulations or fees. For camping, especially wild camping, it's always best to check local guidelines or inquire with guesthouses and local authorities regarding permits and designated areas to ensure compliance and safety.

Is the Komani Lake ferry suitable for families with children?

Yes, the Komani Lake ferry can be a wonderful experience for families. The stunning scenery provides continuous entertainment, and the journey is relatively calm. However, be prepared for a 2.5 to 3-hour trip with limited amenities. Ensuring children have snacks, drinks, and activities can make the journey more comfortable. Finding a good spot on deck for views is also key.

Are dogs allowed on the Komani Lake ferry?

Policies regarding pets, including dogs, can vary between ferry operators and may depend on the size and temperament of the animal. It's highly recommended to contact the specific ferry company you plan to use in advance to confirm their pet policy and any requirements, such as leashes or carriers.

What are the accommodation options near the Komani and Fierze ferry terminals?

Accommodation options near both terminals are generally limited but growing. Near Koman, you might find guesthouses or small hotels. Fierze, being a gateway to the Albanian Alps, also offers guesthouses, particularly for those continuing to Valbona. Many guesthouses provide local cuisine, often featuring fresh fish from the lake. Booking in advance is advisable, especially during peak season.

How can I reach the Komani Lake ferry terminals using public transport?

Public transport options to the Komani terminal typically involve furgons (minibuses) or shared taxis from Shkodër. For Fierze, connections are often made from Bajram Curri, which itself can be reached by furgon from other Albanian cities. It's best to research current schedules and book transport in advance, as services can be infrequent or change seasonally.

What is the best season to experience the Komani Lake ferry, considering weather and crowds?

While the ferry operates year-round, the spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer pleasant weather, lush landscapes, and fewer crowds than the peak summer months. Summer (June-August) provides warm weather ideal for swimming, but the ferry can be very crowded. Winter travel is possible but expect colder temperatures and potentially less frequent services.

Are there cafes, pubs, or restaurants near the Komani and Fierze ferry terminals?

Near the Komani terminal, you'll typically find a small cafe or two where you can purchase tickets and grab a drink or snack before departure. Options near the Fierze terminal are also limited, often consisting of small local eateries or guesthouses that offer meals. It's wise to plan for meals and refreshments, especially if you have a long wait or are arriving late.
