It was built in 1863 in the north of the city center as a replacement for the former Ludwigsbahnhof in the city center, whose capacities had been exhausted after the drastic increase in rail traffic. With 28,000 travelers per day, Würzburg's main train station is still one of the most important stations in Bavaria today, as it is located at the intersection of several heavily frequented rail traffic axes.

The central station is now a convenient low-rise building and was built in the 1950s in place of the destroyed in the Second World War station building. This is where important regional and long-distance lines intersect. There are eleven tracks available for passenger traffic. The main station is centrally located in the city center.
