Numerous prehistoric burial mounds and burnt offering sites testify to a lively settlement since the Stone Age. In 15 AD, the Romans conquered the area of today's Pfaffenwinkel and opened up the land with roads and settlements. The most important is certainly the Via Claudia Augusta. The former Roman imperial state road ran for over 500 kilometers from the Po over the Alps to the Danube. Today, you can follow in the footsteps of the Romans on a signposted cycle path. The Via Claudia is crossed by the large east-west road Salzburg - Bregenz near Epfach. The Brenner road runs almost parallel to the Via Claudia via Murnau, Weilheim and Raisting to Augsburg. The remains of Roman villas can be discovered along the old route.
