Can you imagine sending a letter from the ends of the earth? The most remote post office is located here. Opening hours are a bit erratic, so don't be caught off guard.

      Closed on Monday!

The infamous post office at the end of the world is located in the picturesque bay of Bahía Ensenada Zaratiegui on the Beagle Channel. Here you can have the end of the world stamped in your passport for 3 (!) USD and actually send (expensive) end of the world mail.

Due to the pandemic, the post office has lost a living legend: the talkative Carlos with the iconic moustache, who doesn't mince his words, has retired from his post office after a serious Covid illness. Since 2021, he himself has only been there very rarely.

His son has now taken over the task of welcoming travelers from all over the world there, although he doesn't seem to take it quite as seriously as his father. Since then, the post office has often been closed for several days without notice. You can inquire about the current opening times at the Visitor Center in Ushuaia, but there is no guarantee. Perhaps that will change again when tourism returns to normal.

Carlos was born in Buenos Aires in 1948, but moved to Tierra del Fuego at a young age. Before the national park was founded, the land down there was largely no man's land, so he decided to set up a small grocery store in the bay. His customers were mainly sailors who sailed through the Beagle Channel. So that they could dock and Carlos could drive out himself, he also built the jetty, which still exists today.

When the establishment of the national park was decided upon, there were frictions with the national park administration, because of course no one was allowed to live in the protected area or own private buildings. He firmly rejected all the money that was offered to Carlos for the relocation. But he had a new idea.

The coastal waters no longer belonged to the national park, so he built a new building on his jetty - and thereby silenced the national park administration. Perhaps the man's persistence meant that she simply turned a blind eye to it, because strictly speaking the house is still built over the beach and not over the water.

Whatever the case, the post office at the end of the world still exists today - in the middle of the national park.
