Around 1330, the blood miracle occurred in Walldürn: at the sacrament, the priest at that time turned over the cup of wine transformed into the blood of Christ, and poured it on the corporal, a linen cloth. To the surprise of the pastor, the body of Christ stood out on the cloth. Horrified, he hid the scarf until his death fifty years after this incident. Only on his deathbed did he abandon the miracle and a pilgrimage that lasted for centuries into the small Walldürn began.
By 1497, the old church had become too small for the pilgrims, and with the help of letters of indulgence a new building, today's pilgrimage basilica, was financed. Inside you can still find the corporal, even if now the body on the cloth is completely faded.

The week of Corpus Christi is particularly interesting. The pilgrims from Fulda arrive. The pilgrimage has its origins in a momentous incident from 1330: During a Eucharistic celebration, the Walldürner priest Heinrich Otto overturned the already consecrated chalice after the conversion. The shed blood of Christ in the form of wine then drew the image of the crucified Christ and eleven individual heads of Christ with a crown of thorns on the corporal. The terrified priest hid the corporal behind a stone on the altar. 50 years later he eased his conscience on his deathbed and named the hiding place of the cloth. The linen cloth was found at the place mentioned, the miracle (blood count) became widely known, and the cloth was greatly worshiped.
