Peat was cut in this area in the 10th and 11th centuries. This created a marshy area. In the 17th century, a mill with a paddle wheel was built to drain the area. It was beautifully restored in 2014.
The polder mill is the only mill of its kind in Belgium. It gives a unique picture of how things were in the polders in the 17th century.
In addition to its historical value, it is of course also a beautiful landmark in the area.

Nowadays, they are rarely used for their original purpose, but rather serve as technical and historical monuments to a long tradition of craftsmanship: The heavy millstones inside were moved solely by the power of the wind, for example, grinding grain into flour (so-called grain mills) or pressing oil from fruits (e.g., olives) (so-called oil mills). Occasionally – more commonly along the Dutch coast, but also here at this "polder mill" in the former peat mining area – the function of the windmill was quite different: It pumped water to a higher level and thus served for drainage.

Thus, these old windmills are the best proof that people were clever enough several centuries ago – long before the discovery of electricity and the inventions that followed it – to harness the power of the elements for their own purposes.
