The Kupfer arises on the southeast edge of Übrigshausen next to the Seeholzweg on the edge of a small wood and runs southwest for the first one and a half kilometers, then turns to the right and flows the remaining first third of its course in a northerly direction in front of the step edge of the Waldenburg Mountains to Kupferzell. Up to there, its valley is a fairly flat and wide hollow in the Lettenkeuper overlay (Erfurt Formation) of the Hohenloher Plain with a straightened river bed, often bordered by wide arable land on the flat side hills. In Kupferzell the stream bed reaches the Muschelkalk and the stream continues to flow in a northwesterly direction, deepens steeply and runs through a narrow and natural meander valley. Forests are increasingly covering the side slopes, and from Neufels onwards they often even cover the valley floor. In Forchtenberg, now running in the Lower Muschelkalk and about 140 m below the Randhöhen, it flows into the Kocher from the left.
