The Großbüttel village wurt was built in the first millennium AD as protection against the North Sea from clay and the manure produced by livestock farming. Storm surges reduced the size of today's Wurt, as the artificially raised settlement areas in the marine alluvium (marsh) are called.

The Wurt belongs to a group of several Wurt settlements (Wöhrden, Wesselburen) that have emerged since the 7th and 8th centuries AD (excavations in Wellinghusen and Hassenbüttel). It was founded west of the inland marsh near the coast, which had been mossed since around 500 AD. Before this time, parts of the old marsh were already populated by Germanic tribes between the birth of Christ and 400 AD (excavations in Tiebensee and Haferwisch).
