In the past, the locks of Leers-Noord formed the connection between French/Flemish territory and have passed between France and the Netherlands several times in history. Only in the Treaty of Kortrijk 1820 was the border definitively established (a little further on la maison du canal / former customs office and current café/restaurant is on the border).
