‘Fort Independence’ was formerly known as ‘Castle William’, named in 1701 after William II of England. The island off the coast of Boston Harbor had served as a strategic location for military fortifications for centuries.
After being destroyed by the British in the ‘American Revolutionary War’ in 1776 and rebuilt by the American government, the fortress was renamed ‘Fort Independence’ in 1797. Today it is part of the ‘Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park’.

Fort Independence, located on Castle Island off of Boston Harbor, is one of the oldest continuously fortified English sites in the US. Dating back to 1634, the fort is now an ideal spot to walk or run while taking in views of the surrounding waters as well as a moment of American history.
