The bridge was built in 1995 after a long discussion and connects the southern part of the right bank of the Weser and the large parking lot of Kanzlers Weide with the city center of Minden at the level of the Weserglacis. Above all, the change in the view of the Porta Westfalica from Minden, which lies in the North German lowlands, was discussed.

The competition was won by the Stuttgart civil engineer Jörg Schlaich. He constructed a light suspension bridge that is 177 meters long, spans the Weser at 103 meters with a 3.50 meter wide concrete ramp and is suspended from two 22 meter high tubular steel masts. This only slightly impairs the view of the panorama of the Porta Westfalica.

The southern side of the bridge, facing Porta Westfalica, is illuminated blue at night. This illumination is part of a blue band of light that continues from the city across the bridge to the east and includes the Minden ship mill.

In April 2016, the bridge was closed to cyclists because the railings were too low for cycling. An additional rope was installed in November 2016 to raise the railings to the legally required height of 1.30 m, which made the bridge available for use by cyclists.

The "Glacis Bridge" in Minden is a suspension bridge over the Weser, only for pedestrians and cyclists. It connects the city center of Minden with the large car park on “Kanzlers Weide” on the other bank of the Weser. A good idea from city planners to keep cars away. It was designed by Jörg Schlaich.

Here you have a beautiful view of the Weser and the Schiffmühle (replica) as well as Porta Westfalica with the Kaiser Wilhelm monument in the far distance. A good point for a short break.

Nearby are the Weser beach with beach bar and the Schiffmühlen gastronomy with beer garden.
