The Franciscans didn't have it easy at first. It was only when they cared for the sick during the plague that they gained the trust of the citizens. Because the chapel soon could no longer accommodate all the believers, Prince-Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen laid the foundation stone for today's baroque church in 1652. Following this, the monastery buildings were built, which were expanded in the following centuries.
