Abbazia di San Giovanni in Venere – The divine balcony of Abruzzo.
Resolutely hit the brakes and swap the coastline for a short, sporty climb up the hill for a moment. Atop the Promontorio di Venere awaits one of Italy's most magical and spiritual places.
The Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere. This impressive 12th-century abbey was built on the foundations of an ancient Roman temple dedicated to the goddess of love, Venus. Surrounded by ancient olive groves, this place exudes a serene tranquility that contrasts beautifully with the lively beaches below.

History
The reference to Venus derives from a tradition that identifies a pagan temple on the site of the current church (a temple, according to some, built in 80 BC and dedicated to Venus Conciliatrice). The only trace of this temple would have remained in the toponym Portus Veneris, which designated a landing place at the mouth of the Sangro river in the Byzantine era (we recall that the Byzantines controlled the coastal areas of the south until the 11th century, when they were definitively expelled by the Normans ) [1].
