The Geesthacht pumped storage power plant is a highly interesting and impressive building.
It is located in an energy park, consisting of a lake above the Geesthanges (80m), 3 huge tubes that are 612 meters long and in which the Elbe water is pumped up and "parked" there to generate electricity when required. The lake has a capacity the size of the inner and outer Alster in Hamburg. The basin covers an area of 500 by 600 meters and has a volume of 3.6 million cubic meters.
If necessary, the water masses rush down the tubes to generate electricity and drive the turbines. The turbines are switched on about 4,800 times a year. It takes about 8 hours to fill the lake up again and 5 hours to empty it.
The pumping station was put into operation in October 1958 and is the largest of its kind in northern Germany.
