Rugaard was founded in 1579, when the nobleman Hans Axelsen Arnfeldt bought land from the crown, including farms in the villages of Attrup, Rosmus, Balle, Hyllested and Rove.
The castle is located at the top of a slope down to the lake, N'rresa, with an eastern view of the lake and the Kattegat. The lakes, which appeared after the compaction of ice age shields, are the former sea bays that became lakes as the land rose after the compaction of ice age plates.
