The Wittelsbach Fountain is a monumental fountain at the western end of Maximiliansplatz, built in 1893-95 on the remains of the former city wall. The completion of the central drinking water supply for Munich by a high-pressure line from the Mangfall valley in 1883 was to be honored with the fountain. The sculptor Adolf von Hildebrand designed it in the classicist style as an allegory of the elemental forces of the element water. Art historians consider it the most beautiful fountain in Munich.
