At the Kitagawa Outcrop of the Japan Median Tectonic Line in Ōshika, you can see how two very different layers of rock grind along side each other, with about 5 mm per year. The seismic activity has grumbled the rock into small stones and sand. The Kitagawa Outcrop is located in a beatiful valley along historic Akiha Kodo (National Route 152). There is a parking lot and toilets. The steps to the Outcrop in the riverbed of the Kashio River are pretty steep so walk carefully.

The Kitagawa Outcrop, a nationally designated natural monument, is impressive because of the way two faults are eroding into each other. Please leave your bicycle in the parking lot. The outcrop is located on the bank of the river. Please note that the stairs leading down to the river are narrow and steep.
