The church of Saint-Etienne-le-Vieux was probably founded in the 10th century, when the city of Caen experienced its first significant growth. It is mentioned for the first time in the charters that William the Conqueror issued to the two abbeys of Caen around 1067 under the name sanctus Stephanus vetus. The name "the Old" distinguishes it from the abbey church of Saint-Étienne, built from the 11th century onwards.
