Camp Beverlo is one of the twelve military domains that belong to the European ecological network of Natura 2000 areas. Due to the vastness of the area and also due to its military use, beautiful pieces of nature have been preserved, such as inland dunes, dry and wet heathlands and fens. The inland dunes present are special because of their vastness. Seepage zones and marshy depressions or lower places where the groundwater flows on the surface also occur here. Typical for this region are the poor sandy soils that are crossed by numerous stream valleys. The valley of the Zwarte Beek is a beautiful example of this. It is one of the best preserved stream valleys in the Benelux.
