A marketentster (also: marketenzer, sweetelaar or sweetiewoman) was a woman who followed an army and was entitled to sell goods to the soldiers, such as drinks, food and small necessities for daily life. Market ladies sold drinks from the typical market star keg that they wore on their hips. She should not be confused with the laundry lady of an army unit. In many cases the marketer was married to a soldier below the rank of non-commissioned officer. They often ran a kind of café in camps and barracks. At that time, the army did not yet have its own canteen service. In the permanent barracks of the standing armies of the later nineteenth century, the market ladies ran the soldiers' canteen and sometimes also performed tasks such as washing and maintaining the soldiers' clothing.

In the nineteenth century, the position of marketer in the Dutch army was subject to strict rules. For example, it was determined that the marketer had to be married to a member of the unit. It was also recorded what she could sell and at what price. In addition to a uniform that bore a strong resemblance to that of her unit, the marketer also received a badge stating her name and the army unit. The Dutch army still had female marketers until the twentieth century. Their function was then taken over by the canteen service. The Royal Netherlands Army still uses market ladies on ceremonial occasions.
Since 1973, the Dutch-Limburg and Gelderland militias have again had official market girls in uniform, who also participate in competitions.
