Almost in the center of the city, in the area called Piano San Rocco, the Piano delle Fosse di Cerignola is now the only surviving evidence of a centuries-old method of storing grain. Deposits dug into a tuffaceous terrain, bell-shaped, 4 to 7 meters high, closed by wooden boards covered with earth in the shape of a pyramid to facilitate the flow of rainwater.

We have arrived in one of the most important places in Cerignola: the Piano delle Fosse Granarie! It is located south of the town. With at least 600 pits (identified by means of special memorial stones, on which a progressive number and the owner's initials are engraved) spread over an area of 26,000 m², it represents the latest example of a grain conservation method typical of the Capitanata area.
