The origins of the church go back to a distant past. There used to be a primitive chapel here, which was replaced before 1075 by a first Romanesque church, which in turn was replaced by a second one in the 12th century. The church was destroyed by the German air force on May 11, 1940 with some incendiary bombs. Restoration work only began in the early 1950s under the direction of architect Simon Brigode.
The church is more than 45 meters long and almost 34 meters wide. The interior has the appearance of a hall church, made up of five parallel naves. In reality, the central nave, twelve meters high, is flanked by three chapels and a pentagonal chancel.
