Pijk Chapel
The Pijk Chapel, built in 1815 by three
Napoleon soldiers from Everbeek who survived the 1812 Russian campaign
and thus fulfilled their promise to build a chapel
in honor of Our Lady of
Peace / Notre Dame de la Paix, in gratitude for their
safe return. The name Pijkskapel (Peak Chapel) is
derived from "paix." According to
tradition, the three soldiers were: Jean Baptiste Vandesande, Marcelin Roeland,
and a certain Bienvenu. Within the walls
of the chapel, they each planted a
yew tree, of which only one remains. No image of the chapel itself has yet been found, making it
impossible to reconstruct.
The FBBCE (Fund
for the Protection of Brakel's
Cultural Heritage) intends to commemorate this historical event by
establishing a monument.
