Better known as the Madonna delle Grazie, it is one of the most important churches in Udine in the center of the city. The ancient church was originally dedicated to Saints Gervasio and Protasio when it was chosen to house an image of the Madonna, considered miraculous. This icon originally belonged to Giovanni Emo of January 1479, Lieutenant of the Venetian Republic in Friuli, who was to receive it as a gift from the Sultan of Constantinople. The construction work for the sanctuary began on April 12, 1495 with the laying of the foundation stone. The church was officially consecrated on May 12, 1520 by the bishop of Caorle.

The sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Graces of Udine flourished as the guardian of a miraculous image of the Mother of God. In the second half of the 15th century Friuli was under the dominion of the Venetian Republic and in January 1479 he was appointed lieutenant of the Venetian government knight Giovanni Emo. He jealously preserved a painting of the Madonna in the castle of Udine, where he lived, which he is said to have received as a gift from the sultan of Constantinople.
