The Hühnerbruch (Chicken Grove) is named after the black grouse, whose population was wiped out in the 1950s and 60s by the construction of the airport in the middle of the nature reserve.

At the former tank washing facility of the old Camp Altenrath barracks, smooth newts, green frogs, and carnivorous aquatic plants (bladderwort) can be easily observed. In the puddles along the paths, especially in early summer, you can spot natterjack toad tadpoles.
