Very nice area for cycling, walking and photography. It's just a pity that the Elbe Cycle Path runs right next to the road here, so the cars drive by very close and you inhale their exhaust fumes while cycling. It would be much nicer if the cycle path would run on the Elbe dyke or at least further away from the road.

The approximately 80-hectare Zollenspieker Nature Reserve, located directly on the Elbe River, has been a protected area since April 26, 1988, and was designated a European Union Habitats Directive (FFH) area in 1998.

This area comprises the foreshore area at river kilometers 594 to 598, as well as

two small, very narrow inland dike areas, Carlsbrack and the Riepenburger Brack bird sanctuary, which extend from the dike to the Marschbahn embankment.

The nature reserve is directly influenced by tidal and floodplain dynamics. In this area, the direction of water flow changes regularly, resulting in high and low water levels. These also rise and fall considerably faster today, but are also higher and occur significantly more frequently than was the case, for example, 50 years ago. In the Zollenspieker area, there are now an average of 40 to 60 floods annually, with the entire dike foreland under water.
