The church is located above the Piazza di Spagna at the top of the famous "Spanish Steps".
The order to build the church was given by King Louis XI, who was in Italy at the time. of France in 1482. In 1495 his indirect successor Louis XII. France began construction. The church was completed in 1587 as part of a Paulaner monastery that had existed since 1494; the consecration was carried out by Pope Sixtus V. The staircase was built between 1723 and 1725 by Francesco de Sanctis.
