The Ritz Madeira was opened in 1905 by Christian Ritz, a New York businessman whose family originally came from Switzerland.
Christian Ritz was a successful textile merchant who did business between Europe and America. While sailing on a merchant ship across the Atlantic from New York to Southampton, a storm struck off the coast of the Canary Islands and the ship was blown off course to reach the island of Madeira. The ship found safe shelter in Funchal, the capital in the south of the island of Madeira.

Hiking
One of the most famous cafés (restaurants, also cabarets) in Madeira. The blue tiles are worth looking at. It's also worth taking a break, just because of the payment (no more will be revealed). There is live music here regularly.
