Wippershain is a district of the municipality of Schenklengsfeld in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district in eastern Hesse. In terms of population, the place is the second largest district of Schenklengsfeld after the core community.

The village is about 6.2 kilometers west of the core community and about 7 km southeast of Bad Hersfeld. The source of the Wüllersbach is in the local area, which drains into the Haune via the Fischbach and the Eitra.

The place is on the southern slope of the Wippershainer Höhe. Its highest point of 456 meters is only about 600 meters north of the village. To the south and southeast, the terrain slopes slightly towards the plateau of the Kuppenrhön or the Hessian Bowling Game. To the west the land slopes down into the lower Haunetal.

The oldest known written mention of Wippershain was under the name Wyprechteshain in 1317 in a document from the Kreuzberg monastery. Further mentions are made below of the place names (the year of mention in brackets): Wypersheim (1484) and Wippershain (1559).

It is believed that the place was named after Saint Wigbert, who was buried in the nearby Hersfeld Monastery. The location on Altstrasse, on which the pilgrims came to the saint's grave in Hersfeld, may have contributed to this. The Höhenstrasse was called “Karlsstrasse” in this section because Charlemagne is said to have traveled there from the Weser to Würzburg.
