    Running

The Otay Mountain Truck Trail intersects with the Minnewawa Truck Trail here at Doghouse Junction. This isn't the technical summit, but some of the best views on the entire mountain are from right here. You can keep running past these cell towers to the actual peak if you want.

The Otay Mountain via Minnewawa Truck Trail offers a demanding yet incredibly scenic jogging experience, perfect for those who love a good climb. You'll navigate an unpaved dirt and gravel fire road, with sections of loose rock, as you ascend through the rugged Otay Mountain Wilderness. The highlight is undoubtedly the panoramic views from Doghouse Junction and the summit, stretching across the Pacific Ocean, San Diego, and even into Mexico. This difficult route covers 12.5 miles (20.1 km) with a substantial 3106 feet (947 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 2 hours and 55 minutes. It's a true test of endurance with a spectacular payoff. Otay Mountain terrain for jogging is varied, but consistently challenging.

When planning your visit, be aware that the bottom gate to the Minnewawa Truck Trail is now locked to general vehicle traffic, though you might still share the path with U.S. Border Patrol and mountain bikers. Parking for Minnewawa Truck Trail Otay Mountain is available near the trailhead. Given the trail's exposure and length, carrying ample water is crucial, especially if you're jogging during warmer periods. The best time of year to jog Otay Mountain is during cooler seasons to avoid the heat, and an early morning start is always a good idea to beat the sun and enjoy the quiet.

This trail takes you through the Otay Mountain Wilderness, an area vital for several sensitive plant and animal species, including the world's largest known stand of Tecate cypress. The unique natural features Otay Mountain offers, combined with its historical significance (you might spot abandoned World War II bunkers), make it more than just a workout. The scenic viewpoints Minnewawa Truck Trail provides are unparalleled, offering a dual-country perspective that sets it apart from many other trails in the region.

The Otay Mountain Truck Trail offers a unique and challenging jogging experience through rugged landscapes, often sitting above the marine layer for clear, sunny conditions. This difficult 16.1-mile (25.9 km) route features extensive dirt and gravel roads, with a substantial 2906 feet (886 metres) of elevation gain that will test your fitness over an estimated 3 hours and 5 minutes. You'll be rewarded with panoramic views from viewpoints like Doghouse Junction, looking out over the San Ysidro Mountains, San Diego, and into Mexico.

When planning your visit, be aware that the trail runs along the US-Mexico border, so encounters with US Border Patrol are common. The terrain can include loose gravel and some washouts, so sturdy shoes are a must. Always carry ample water, especially given the trail's exposure and significant climbing, and consider starting early to avoid the midday sun.

This area is part of the nearly 17,000-acre Otay Mountain Wilderness, internationally recognized for its diverse plant species. Otay Mountain itself is the tallest peak in the San Ysidro Mountains, standing at 3,568 feet (1,087 meters). The trail also holds historical elements, including remnants of World War II coastal observation bunkers, adding an interesting layer to your run.
