Next to the Sint-Amandus and Sint-Anna church in Otegem, on the side of the Zwevegemstraat, is the monument of Joseph 'Jef' Planckaert. The highlight of this cyclist's career was the year 1962. And that is exactly 60 years ago. He was then the winner of, among others, Paris-Nice, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the Belgian road championship and the Tour of Luxembourg. In the Tour de France he finished second in the general classification, 4 minutes and 59 seconds behind winner Jacques Anquetil.

Jef Planckaert was a professional cyclist from 1956 to 1965. He is regarded as one of the best Belgian cyclists of the late fifties and early sixties. The highlight was the year 1962 when he became Belgian champion on the Citadel of Namur, won Paris-Nice and the Tour of Luxembourg, won Liège-Bastogne-Liège and finished second in the final classification of the Tour de France, after Jacques Anquetil .

Jef died in 2007, two years later he received a statue in his hometown of Otegem. He is not the progenitor of the Planckaert family, with which he is often confused, because Jef was from West Flanders, while the illustrious Planckaert family is from Nevele.
