"The last original hacker forest in the Netherlands", says an information board at the edge of the forest.
Ever since the emergence of the village of Holset (the name of the village may have been derived from "hulisetum", holly forest) in the early Middle Ages, this was a coppice forest. The wood was used for cooking and home heating. Bunches of branches, called "sjanse", were used in the oven of the bakehouse. The felling right, which was originally granted to the farming community, was transferred to private individuals in the 19th century. To date, the private owners (who organized themselves in 2008 as the Vereniging Kapsrechtigden) have the right to fell, a situation that is unique in the Netherlands.
