The "Hohe Stein" in Ostenholz serves as a memorial stone commemorating the evacuation of the communities in 1936/1938. On the "High Stone", which the Bergen military training area command erected in 1938 as a memorial and which now stands in front of the church in Ostenholz, you can read about "Heidjern willing to make sacrifices". But the residents were by no means willing to make sacrifices, as a letter from the farmers' leaders to the Reich Minister of War von Blomberg proves: "You believe that the farmers of the Bergen area are happy to make their farms available for the creation of the Bergen military training area. This assumption is completely wrong, we are prepared to make any sacrifice, but not this one."

But before they were resettled, the farmers first offered resistance in a variety of ways. The Reich Minister of Defense's planning intentions to create a military training area in the Heidmark had of course not gone unnoticed by them. The residents of this area became restless and did not lack protest measures. This was all the more so because the new Reich Hereditary Farm Law had been announced by the Reich Food Estate at this time, which would make the farmers the source of blood for the Nation and coined the slogan "blood and soil". The farmers of the Heidmark, who had been settled on their farms for centuries, had passed their property down through generations. Their most sacred principle was to preserve the farm and to pass on the legacy of their fathers in an improved form to the next generation. They did not want to give up their beloved homeland without resistance.

But all resistance was unsuccessful. The idyll was destroyed and the Heidmark became a military training area.
