The "Schmoeler Hexenstein" is located at the confluence of the B 502 with Gut Schmoel (part of the Schwartbuck community) and is intended to commemorate the witch trials that came to a gruesome end here when the convicts were burned at the stake.

The events to which the memorial refers are historically documented: In the spring of 1686 there were all kinds of rumors about witchcraft and sorcery in the villages belonging to Gut Schmoel.
The then landlord, Christoph Graf Rantzau, had 15 women and men arrested and sentenced to death for damaging spells, because at that time jurisdiction lay with the landlords, to whom the farmers were subject.
Although Pastor Linekogel from Giekau tried desperately to obtain a postponement of the execution because many of the accused had withdrawn their confessions from him, Count Rantzau did not abandon his plan. Even when the defendants stated that they had only admitted everything to avoid torture, the landlord remained adamant and the convicts were first strangled and then burned at the stake. A more detailed account of the events can be found in the Schwartbucker village chronicle.
In memory of these gruesome events, the Giekau artist Jan Koberstein created the impressive work of art with the support of many helpers in the years 2012 to 2018.
